Halladay Draws Inspiration From Late Sports Psychologist

Sep 25, 2014 8:37 PM

Philadelphia Phillies right-hander Roy Halladay credits Harvey Dorfman, the late, famed sports psychologist, for much of his success as a pitcher.

After he compiled a 14.73 ERA in his first two starts, Halladay went back to old e-mail conversations with Dorfman.

He is 2-0 with a 1.71 ERA in his last three starts as he gets set to face the Indians on Tuesday night at Progressive Field.

Halladay has credited an improved outlook for much of the turnaround.

"It's a way of looking at a game," he said. "It's not a mental thing. It's how you approach the game. I think coming out of Spring Training, having short outings, having some poor outings, coming back wanting to prove that I was healthy, my focus wasn't on making pitches. My focus was on trying to prove something that necessarily didn't need to be proven. So I just tried to readjust and get back to having my focus on singular pitches and working counts and simplifying. That has always been my bread and butter, and for some reason, I got away from that. I think just coming off the injuries that I had [in 2012], obviously, being under a microscope and a lot of questions being asked, I let that kind of divert my attention. Just getting back to really simplifying is what I always tried to do.

"And I feel like that's what helped me get back to where I need to be."

Sep 17, 2014 9:28 PM

The Boston Red Sox have activated Joel Hanrahan from the disabled list, but they will continue using Andrew Bailey as their closer.

While Hanrahan was on the DL with a hamstring issue, Bailey excelled and went 5-for-6 in save chances. Bailey has 20 strikeouts and a 1.46 ERA in 12 1/3 innings this season.

Garcia To Remain In Baltimore Organization

Sep 27, 2014 7:10 AM

Freddy Garcia has informed the Baltimore Orioles that he will remain with the organization through May 14.

The 36-year-old had a clause in his minor league contract that would have allowed him to opt out following his most recent start.

Garcia has been sharp through five starts for Triple-A Norfolk this season, pitching to a 2.67 ERA with 21 strikeouts against two walks through 33 2/3 innings.

Twins Not Ready To Declare Themselves Winners In Liriano Trade

Oct 31, 2014 9:43 AM

The Minnesota Twins traded Francisco Liriano to the Chicago White Sox last summer in exchange for infielder Eduardo Escobar and left-hander Pedro Hernandez.

Many believe Minnesota has already won the trade, but general manager Terry Ryan isn't yet ready to declare a winner.

"I don't think I can say that right now," Ryan said. "It looks great on the surface, because Liriano probably wasn't coming back. He didn't come back (to Chicago). The two guys we got are about 23 (years old). One of them (started Saturday), and the other (was) playing in the field.

"But if they go south here in about 12 games, they're in Rochester and they never resurface, you're going to say, 'Well, you should have got more for Liriano. You didn't get anything.' So I suspect in August or so I'll be able to say, 'OK, these guys are guys that are probably going to be with us for a while.' Then you say it was a decent trade."

Chicago paid $2 million for a rental in Liriano who posted a 5.40 ERA with a lot of strikeouts, but also a lot of walks in 56 2/3 innings. The White Sox did not re-sign the left-hander.

MLB Looking Into Spat Between Price, Umpire

Sep 17, 2014 6:39 AM

Major League Baseball is looking into a verbal altercation between Rays left-hander David Price and home plate umpire Tom Hallion over the weekend.

Price accused Hallion of shouting a curse word toward him during Tampa Bay's 8-3 win over the Chicago White Sox on Sunday.

The AL Cy Young winner thought Hallion missed a pitch and exchanged words with the plate umpire while heading to the dugout after the seventh inning.

Hallion later called Price a "liar." Price took to Twitter and disputed Hallion's version.

Rays Don't See Myers As Polished Enough For Promotion

Nov 2, 2014 3:25 PM

The Tampa Bay Rays are expected to promote top prospect Wil Myers at some point this season.

Some are wondering why the move doesn't come sooner rather than later.

"Myers has obvious talents. When talking to several scouts who saw him play during Spring Training, all of them spoke of him having a quick bat," writes Bill Chastain.

"Having noted that, I'm not sure if the Rays feel like he's polished enough to join the club just yet -- even though he's hitting .309 with two homers and 16 RBIs in 21 games with Triple-A Durham."

The Rays acquired Myers from the Kansas City Royals in an offseason trade involving James Shields and Wade Davis.

Cherington Doesn't Think Free Agents Are Turned Off By Red Sox

Oct 5, 2014 9:56 PM

The Boston Red Sox had to do some rebuilding this offseason, using the strategy of outbidding competitors rather than signing players to long-term deals.

The players that signed -- Jonny Gomes, Mike Napoli, Shane Victorino, David Ross and Ryan Dempster -- don't understand why anyone would be turned off by playing in Boston.

"The core Red Sox guys from what happened last year, and knowing those guys and their character -- how they approach the game and how they play the game to win -- I knew 100 percent those guys would have a chip on their shoulder," Gomes said.

"So the opportunity to play in Boston with these guys having a chip on their shoulder was what I signed up for."

Boston general manager Ben Cherington doesn't think free agents were hesitant to jump into Red Sox Nation.

"I didn’t notice that at all," Cherington said. "Maybe if we had been maybe that would have an issue, I don’t know. Even the couple of guys we didn’t sign, that didn’t seem to be an issue.

"I think players want to know two things: They want to know environment and they want to know commitment to winning. And the environment, one way or another, was going to be different."

Yankees Promote Romine To Replace Cervelli

Oct 31, 2014 9:17 PM

The New York Yankees have placed Francisco Cervelli on the disabled list with a broken right hand.

Cervelli broke the hand on Friday night against the Toronto Blue Jays.

The catcher left the game after just five pitches and underwent surgery Saturday morning at New York Presbyterian Hospital. He is expected to be out for six weeks.

In a related move, the Yankees have recalled Austin Romine from Triple-A Scranton.

Romine is hitting .333/.391/.405 with a home run in 42 minor league at-bats this season.

He was New York's second round pick out of high school back in 2007.
